Technical Writer at Nava

Nava is working to improve the lives of millions of people through reimagining their experiences with government services, and we’re looking for a Technical Writer (contractor) to help us create plain language instructional and technical manuals, assessments, and training guides for technical users and support staff.

You are an excellent writer and communicator who is able to anticipate users’ questions and provide a way for users to get additional contextual information when necessary. You help teams manage the complexity of information, providing clear paths to progressively get to more sophisticated or abstract information. Quality characteristics within your work reflect what users expect and want from the information you develop which is easy to use, easy to understand and easy to find.

You can work remotely as part of an agile development team, or work from one of Nava’s offices in DC, SF, or NYC.

Opportunities and Challenges

Nava provides opportunities to do meaningful, impactful, mission-oriented work. As a public benefit corporation, we have a social mission written into our founding charter. The people who work at Nava have a fiduciary duty to our stated mission: to improve access, effectiveness, and simplicity of government services. We see this as an opportunity, but it is also important to highlight the challenges we face in advance.

You will be working within the government ecosystem, which means working dynamically with other government contractors and civil servants. Working with people outside of your company means you’ll likely encounter different working styles, cultural norms and be responsible for maintaining order and focus without authority. At the same time, working as part of a larger team allows us to deliver on projects of larger scale and complexity.

The government contracting ecosystem is a compliance-driven multi-stakeholder environment – particularly when compared to the operating environments for companies of our size in the private sector. Successful members of our team understand how to be innovative within this environment when responding to proposals or delivering software and infrastructure. Finding and recommending ways to improve the way government digital services are procured and  built is one of the highest-leverage ways we help fulfill our mission.

What you’ll do

  • Create plain language instructional and technical documentation, manuals, assessments, and training guides for technical users and support staff
  • Study product samples and collaborate with Service Designers, Content Strategists and Engineers to ensure technical documentation you develop meets the needs of users
  • Select appropriate medium for the message and audience – in addition to writing and organizing support documents for products and services – use photographs, drawings, diagrams, animation, and charts that increase users’ productivity
  • Know the user stories for which you are writing, which are the goals that users need to accomplish by using the product
  • Advocate for users, ensuring that the product employs the necessary programmatic and embedded assistance
  • Ensure the information is appropriate for the intended audience and presented from the user’s point of view
  • Collaborate on developing governance workflows in which information has been verified for accuracy and compliance

What we’re looking for

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a technical writer, with a bonus for experience within the domain of cloud data services and data centers
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or communications, with a bonus for direct experience writing to support digital interfaces and services
  • Work samples that demonstrate technical writing that is task-oriented, accurate, complete, organized and visually effective
  • Experience being the user’s advocate throughout the product development process, including research methods
